DC Bocce League & Lou's City Bar

DC Bocce League & Lou's City Bar

If you live in Washington DC or nearby you should consider joining the DC Bocce League. In addition to other venues, they have league play on at least 2 Boccemon surfaced bocce courts. The first business to install a Boccemon oyster blend bocce court was Vinoteca, a romantic wine bar/bistro offering small plates and entrees. Outside there’s a patio with bocce court that is located in the U Street corridor of Washington DC. Two courts at Highland Park sit between condos and businesses. They were inspired by one of the founders of the league John Groth in 2012.

DC's best recreational sports league w/ locations across DC, VA & MD. Running year-round indoor & outdoor bocce leagues plus social & charity events. Follow their shenanigans on Instagram.

    Highland Park / Lou's Thursdays

Play Bocce on Thursdays on the outdoor courts at Highland Park. Games start at 6:30 pm and run every 45 minutes through the evening. Keep the party going all night long at Lou's City Bar and enjoy Lou's bocce night specials with all of your new best friends!

The DC Bocce League was founded in 2004 by a close group of friends on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. After playing with other recreational leagues around town, the founders decided to put together a social sports experience that was more in tune with their lifestyle. Bocce was the obvious choice! Easy to play, bocce creates a space for players to engage in friendly, casual competition (often with a drink in hand). The League instantly attracted an assorted group of people in their 20s and 30s looking for an excuse to share a unique meetup experience.

    Grow Land Bocce Designs

In 2009 I met Greg Rowland of Growland, LLC and owner of Grow Land Bocce Designs in Scottsdale, Arizona at the bar of Aunt Chilada’s Squaw Peak location. Aunt Chilada’s was putting in a court at the same time that Greg was installing one for a client in nearby Arcadia, AZ.

I find Greg’s attention to detail to be impressive.  In addition, his appreciation for the game of bocce has helped him grow into one of the most knowledgeable resources in the southwest United States for bocce court construction.   Whether you are a private homeowner, you’re representing a resort, a community, or you want a court for your corporate campus, Greg will help fit you with a great design and see that his crew constructs it with skill and integrity.

"Greg builds as fine a court as one might desire and is among the most experienced bocce court installers in the country.... and that is just one small part of the services offered by Grow Land, LLC in Scottsdale, AZ." -- Tom McNutt, Boccemon

About 10 years ago, one of my landscape clients asked if I could build them a bocce court, and like most of us, I immediately said, “Sure, we can do that! Let me look into pricing and I will get you a proposal.” My next move was to “Google it” (of course!!) and I found Tom McNutt of Boccemon, a company in the northwest that makes a crushed oyster shell playing surface that I ended up installing 3 weeks later. Since that day, Grow Land Bocce Designs has created more courts with Boccemon’s oyster shell in Arizona than any other single contractor has built in the United States. Tom has provided Grow Land with not only his premium surface material called Boccemon Rain Country Blend but is a great Wikipedia source for all things bocce. From the most luxurious of resort communities and commercial bocce amenity locations……to “your backyard,” Grow Land can handle it all from the initial design to the completed “ready-to-play” court, and with Boccemon’s Rain Country Blend, that court will give you years and years of bocce pleasure.

Dogfish Head Brewery "Bocce is our thing.."

In 2005 Dogfish Head Brewery in Lewes, Delaware reached out to Boccemon that they wanted bocce courts at their new brewery and taproom in Milton, DE.  The courts have been so popular that as the brewery has grown, they have literally “picked up” and moved them to a third (and likely final) location. That year they started the Intergalactic Bocce Tournament which has been at capacity each year since. Their bocce courts are situated just outside their fabulous taproom and under the occasional shadow of their 24 – 18,000-gallon storage tanks.  Stop in… take a tour… taste some great beers… play some bocce!
